Making an Impact on the Health of the Community and Beyond Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation AnnuAl RePoRt 2006-2007 A nonprofit organization supporting the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a campus of the Louisiana State University System The Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation provides the Pennington Biomedical Research Center with vital funding for nutrition-based research that aims to prevent premature death from chronic diseases. MIssIon Message from the Chair JOHN B. NOLAND Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation John B. Noland, Chairman Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation 2 Message to Our Supporters o n behalf of the Board of Directors of the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation, I am proud to share this Annual Report as we recognize the supporters of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. I suggest there is no greater investment for our personal health and the communitys economic health than to help PBRC reach its tremendous potential. the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation supports the work of the Center by providing vital funding and advocacy for its important research. Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) has gained international stature as the largest academically- based nutrition research center in the world. this is at a time when our country and even the world are facing an epidemic posed by chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity. PBRC is well positioned to meet these challenges through its world-renowned research in nutrition and preventive medicine. the Center is also a catalyst for driving economic growth. With support of the business community, state legislators, and donors, PBRC scientists successfully acquire more than $3 in additional research grants for every $1 of unrestricted support received. I am pleased to report we have made more progress than ever before. this fiscal year, the Foundation provided $1,000,000 in unrestricted funding to PBRC. In addition, grants for specific research programs and endowed support of Chairs and Professorships met additional funding needs. In total, because of the generosity of friends and supporters, the Foundation has generated a financial impact of nearly $4 million dollars in 2006- 2007. thank you for your support. Your gift, joined with others, does make a difference. With deepest gratitude, A lasting legacy I n early 2007, the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation received an extraordinary surprise from Imogene newsom Brown. Mrs. Brown presented a gift of $1,000,000 in memory of her late husband, the late l. Heidel Brown. Mrs. Browns gift is the largest single gift from an individual since C. B. Doc and Irene Pennington made their original gift to establish the Center in 1980. sadly, Mrs. Brown passed away just a few months after making her gift. she is deeply missed by the entire PBRC family. she was an avid and active participant in activities of the Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation for many years. she particularly enjoyed the scientific Dinner series where she learned from scientists of the Centers renowned research initiatives. on making her gift, Mrs. Brown said that she wanted to demonstrate the importance of the Pennington Biomedical Research Centers breakthrough research and its contributions to economic development. Most importantly, she made her gift without restrictions so that the Center could use it where the funds were needed most. For her gift, she expected no recognition. she expressed only the wish that it be used to further the mission of the Center. the Center is using the funds to advance its strategic plan, Vision 2010. the plan outlines ten key priorities and programs that are supporting PBRCs continued efforts PBRF Remembers Imo Brown An extraordinary Friend of the Center A portrait of L. Heidel Brown was unveiled at a Scientific Dinner in the Spring of 2007 and now hangs in the Pennington Biomedical Research Centers Administration Building, honoring the lifes work of this civic leader and real estate entrepreneur. Shown above are Mrs. Imo Brown (center) with PBRF President/ CEO Jennifer Winstead and PBRC Executive Director Dr. Claude Bouchard. A lasting legacy Through this gift to honor her late husband, she has created her own legacy. in building the worlds leading research and education programs in nutrition and preventive medicine. specifically, Mrs. Browns gift is helping PBRC to expand its research capability to investigate the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity; to add expertise in research related to nutrition, physical activity and genetics; and to translate PBRCs discoveries for the benefits of individuals, families, and larger communities of people. Commenting on the impact of Mrs. Browns gift, PBRF Chairman John noland noted that PBRC research scientists can successfully acquire more than $3 in additional research grants for every $1 of unrestricted support received. A texas native, Mrs. Brown worked tirelessly for the betterment of her adopted home of Baton Rouge, particularly in the areas of healthcare, historic and environmental preservation, the arts and education. she was a model of civic responsibility and contributed both time as a volunteer and financial resources in the form of outstanding philanthropic support to this community and region. Her gift to the Pennington Biomedical Research Center will be remembered and honored as her legacy that will live on for generations to come. 3 Lasting Legacy John B. Noland PBRF Chairman Pennington Biomedical Research Center 4 Message to Our Supporters Message from the Executive Director CLAUDE BOUCHARD, Ph.D. Pennington Biomedical Research Center Claude Bouchard, Ph.D. Executive Director, PBRC George A. Bray, Jr. Super Chair in Nutrition A s a donor and friend of the Pennington Biomedical Research Center and Foundation, your confidence, devotion, and support honor me, our faculty and our staff. thank you, sincerely. A priority for the 2006-2007 fiscal year was to find a means to build a new clinical research building. We sorely need it; we are missing opportunities for significant clinical trials and accompanying research dollars. We are grateful to the Governor and louisiana legislature for appropriating funding and for the support from the Foundation and committed stakeholders, including the Baton Rouge Area Chamber. Construction should commence in early 2008.
We also have a new academic chair which is vital to attracting leading researchers. the chair is the Fairfax Foster Bailey endowed Chair in Heart Disease Prevention, and were grateful to our generous donors, laura and Jim Bailey, Virginia and John noland and P. Foster Bailey.
Your efforts have been invaluable in helping achieve our mission. Foundation gifts and grants outfitted labs with research equipment, brought scientists the world over to the Pennington scientific symposia, recruited research leaders through endowed chairs, and jump-started promising young researchers through unrestricted contributions. Also, we are better able to find and enroll citizen volunteers into clinical trials with a newly restructured recruiting effort. Your help has touched this community greatly by connecting participants to dozens of clinical studies at PBRC and has advanced possible treatments and cures for diabetes, obesity and heart disease, among others.
I deeply appreciate the service of John noland, chairman; Kevin Reilly, sr., immediate past chairman; Paula de la Bretonne, vice chair, and the other members of the PBRF Board of Directors for their outstanding leadership. these volunteer leaders continue to hearten me with their tireless work on our behalf.
Finally, we remember Mrs. Imogene n. Brown in this annual report. Mrs. Brown was an ardent supporter who presented an extremely generous gift this year. she will be greatly missed.
I look forward to an extremely successful year with your continued support. Pennington Biomedical Research Center PBRC is the largest academically-based nutrition research center in the world, and is considered the premier institution of its kind. the power of Pennington is its ability to move from the fundamental basis of all discoveries with basic research, to testing these advancements in individuals through clinical trials, and finally, to translate those discoveries to the community at large through population science. Pennington Biomedical Research Center promotes healthier lives through research and education in nutrition and preventive medicine. the Center is impacting lives through the prevention of major diseases like diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity as well as healthy aging, wellness and community outreach.
