Class Descriptions
Arms, Abs, & Back:
Come to this class to work on defining muscle tone in your
arms, back, and (of course) abs. This is an express 30-minute workout.
If your lower body needs tweaking, check out the counterpart to this class: Butts
& Guts.
Barbell:
NEW! This could be the greatest new thing to come to SMU since the new
Rec Center! Barbell Track 3 launches on August 22. Barbell is a pre-choreographed
strength routine, using a barbell and assorted weighted plates. Please have your barbell
and weights set up and ready to go by the class start time. Participation limited to 40.
Body Sculpt:
Major muscle groups are worked through hi-repetition, low-resistance
exercises to give a chiseled shape to muscles, without adding bulk. Equipment used
in this class may be dumbbells, body bars, bands, medicine balls, BOSU balls, and
more.
Butts & Guts:
Tone that tush and tweak those abs. This class is 30-minutes of
strength for those below the belt muscles and, of course, the all-important
abdominals.
Cardio Hip Hop:
This is the most popular form of dance practiced by pop starts
today. Step-by-step, youll master some of the same dance moves youve seen
choreographed in music videos. You will be shaking your rump all over the dance
floor! Leave your insecurities at home; come ready to let loose and have a great time.
Cardio Ballet:
Inspired by ballet moves, this unique fitness class will kick up your
heart rate as you tighten and trim your legs, glutes, and abs. Cardio Ballet is designed
to improve posture, balance, strength, flexibility, and grace.
Cardio Mixup:
Cardio, cardio, cardio! This class is going to get your heart pumping
and your body shaking. You will not plateau in this class, because the type of cardio is
always changing. The instructor may mix Cardio Salsa, Cardio Kick boxing, Cardio
Hip Hop, Cardio Bosu, Jump Rope, Stair Drills, and more. This class is for the
exerciser that is up for anything, and ready for everything. You will continue to
shock your body in this workout.
Gravity Strength:
These exciting strength classes are held on our Gravity trainers.
Gravity trainers are the commercial line of the popular Total Gym. Gravity Strength
will heat up all the major muscle groups for a total body workout. Each participant
works at his/her chosen level of resistance. Participation is limited to 10. It is first
come, first serve; arrive early. No Gravity trainers may be reserved for friends.

Step Aerobics:
Use the bench as a prop for learning fun choreography. You will
step up, step down, and learn a dance or athletic-style routine. Step Aerobics is great
cardio. This is a classic favorite!
Summer Abs:
Keep the abdominals of summer ALL YEAR LONG! This 15-minute
is strictly to strengthen the abs.
Trekking:
This class is held on the Nordic Track treadmills in the fitness center.
Energizing, upbeat music is played to get you charged and ready to run your heart
out. The instructor uses a wireless microphone, which is also heard through the
multi-media system. In order to hear the music and instructional cues, you must
bring headphones. You will simulate flat roads as well as hills by changing your
grade setting on the treadmill. The instructor designs your course to be challenging
for your personal capabilities. You will experience everything from comfortable stroll
to a breathless sprint.
Yoga/Pilates Fusion:
This class blends Power Yoga with Pilates Mat for a
harmonious mind and body experience. Power Yoga is a dynamic and physically
demanding practice of Yoga that begins with sun salutations and links poses to form
sequences. Pilates involves controlled movements which target the powerhouse,
the core of the human body which all motions originate. Blending Power Yoga with
Pilates Mat creates a strong, balanced, centered, and fluid class. Sustained static
stretches may be infused in this workout to enhance muscular flexibility.
Express Yoga/Pilates Fusion classes are only 30-minutes! Please arrive on time.

Heavy Bag Cardio Combat:
This class takes cardio kickboxing and throws in
boxing gloves and heavy boxing bags to add contact, resistance, force, and power that
can take your boxing training to the next level. Whether your goal is to become more
refined in your boxing technique, burn calories to the max with the cardio and strength
conditioning, or just find out what it feels like to beat the tar out of something, Heavy
Bag Cardio Combat is for you! Participants are encouraged, but not required, to wear
wraps underneath boxing gloves. Gloves will be available in class.
Jogging & Conditioning:
This class will be a 45-minute jog for those who can
sustain jogging for that duration. However, walkers are welcome to join, too. We will
jog different routes, including some SMU campus, Highland and University Park, Katy
Trail, and outdoor track runs. We will meet in front of the round rotunda entrance at
the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. On rainy days, this class will be relocated to
the Nordic Track treadmills in the fitness center.
You do not need a Group X pass to attend Jogging & Conditioning. This class
is free.
Pilates Mat:
Based on teachings of Joseph Pilates, this mat class focuses on
flexibility and strength for the entire body, most specifically, deep core muscles.
Harmony & balance are achieved by integrating mind & body in fluid series of
movements.
Power Yoga:
This is a strong form of Yoga focusing on muscular endurance &
flexibility. Emphasis is on poses and teachings derived from Ashtanga Yoga, and
participation is open to all levels. The Instructor will guide you through Power Yoga
in plain and detailed English (no Sanskrit). No matter what your fitness or flexibility
level, this class can be both physically and emotionally beneficial. You will be working
hard for that well-deserved meditation/relaxation segment at the end of this class!
Spinning:
This is an indoor adventure on a stationary bike to simulate a real road
experience. You will experience interval training, racing, cardiovascular & muscular
endurance, strength, & recovery. New participants should arrive early for proper bike
set-up. Heart rate monitors are highly recommended. A towel and water bottle (at
least 20 fl. oz.) are required. This workout can be as moderate or as challenging as
